We will try to help you understand the denomination of these carburetors. As an example we will take a PHM 40 AS:
P = Pistone, Italian for "piston"; indicating that these carbs have a piston-shaped (round) throttle slide. This in contrast to the "V"-series which have a "Valvole" or "valve" slide which is flat.
H = Horizontal - indication of the direction of air flow through the carburetor.
M = Version, successor to the PHF.
40 = Venturi size in millimeters. Also called "choke" size.
A = Evolution version. Issued in sequence, the letter were assigned depending on application.
Sinistra", Italian for "left". Its counterpart is logically "right", indicated by a D for "Destra". This indicated on which side the adjustment screws are located. Taking the various ways of constructing engines into account, engine builders could opt for either right-handed or left-handed carburettors.
So, the PHM40AS from our example has a round throttle slide, horizontal airflow, measures 40 mm in venturi diameter, is of the first evolution and carries the adjustment screws of the left side.
From this, one can deduct that a PHM40AD is virtually the same carburettor, it just has the adjustment screws on the right hand side.
A relatively simple affair once you know what means what...
